Domain age: Does age really matters in SEO?

Only if age was just a number, the age factor would have never got the importance it often gets. The conventional wisdom has always been that older you get, the wiser and stronger you become. But does this ageless wisdom also apply on SEO? Does website’s domain age really matter for Google, placing more trust on websites that are older while young and newly launched websites have to scramble really hard to earn Google’s trust?

The straight-forward ‘yes’ would have been an easy answer. But any question about the potential impact of website’s domain age begs for a more nuanced answer. SEO is complex and hence very often over simplified answers don’t do quite justice.

What exactly is domain age?

Let’s start our nuanced explanation by first dissecting the meaning of domain age. A website’s domain age simply refers to the length of time a website’s domain name has been registered. In other words, it indicates the total active period or age of a website’s domain.

People who are little confused, a website’s domain name is the unique address or URL that people type on a browser for accessing a specific website.

Moving ahead, the exact time starts from the date a website’s domain is registered and concludes at the current date. Important to note that this time length does not include hosting registration. Domain age only and only considers domain registration date and not hosting registration date or the date when the website actually went live.

For instance, a user registered a domain name www.digitaltechno.com on 5th January, 2024. However, the user purchased the hosting pointing to the above-mentioned domain name on 10th September, 2024. In this case, the website’s domain age will start from January 2024 and not September 2024.

If we were to calculate the age of this specific website then, as on 29th April, 2025, it would be approximately 1 year and 3 months. But people don’t have to know the domain registration date of a website, which can be quite a daunting task.

To spare unnecessary hassle, simply search on Google ‘domain age checker’ and you’ll come across several tools. Most of these tools can disclose the precise age of any website.

Alternatively, you can use WHOIS Lookup tool for checking out the domain age of any website.

How much impact domain age has on SEO?

Most SEO experts unanimously agree that a website’s age has some bearing on its search ranking. But the important question how much is the impact, whether it is major or minor and what are the underlying factors behind its impact.

To answer the first question, the impact is minor, which basically implies that website’s age is actually a low weightage ranking signal.

A website’s age basically indicates about website’s general trustworthiness to Google. The longer it has been active on internet, the more likely it is going to trust that website.

Let’s understand this with a simple analogy. Do you trust any person in the very first meeting. Probably, no. You start trusting someone only after a series of meetings or considerable time has passed since your first meeting.

The same goes with Google. it won’t straight away trust any website that is being indexed and crawled for the very first time or website that became active on Internet barely few months ago.

On the contrary, it is much easier for search engines to trust websites whose domain has been active for a pretty long-time. This implies that search engines may have crawled and indexed the website multiple times in the past, increasing its chances of SERP ranking.

However, it would be really naïve to think that search engines like Google would make domain age the sole or heavy weigh signal for determining its SERP ranking. Search engines simply do not function that way. They have to look into other factors that reveals significant information about the website, which ultimately helps them in determining whether the concern website is worthy of ranking or not for highly competitive keywords .

This includes factors like backlinks, content freshness and quality, website load speed, social signals, UX designs among other things. Google collectively takes all these signals into account while determining its SERP ranking. However, as explicitly mentioned above, not all signals are equal, with some signals assigned as heavy weigh signals while others as low weigh ranking signals.

Backlinks rank pretty high in the list of heavy weigh signals. It by far has the highest bearing on any website’s SERP ranking, outweighing all other ranking signals.

Coming back to the domain age, let us go back to the analogy that we had discussed few moments ago. Do you trust a person deeply only because she or he has been your friend for several years. Certainly, not. You probably know many other people who have been your friend for exactly the same period of time. Time alone cannot be the sole determinant for trusting some one deeply. You will look for other important qualities, like whether the concern person is understanding enough, emphatic and has other worthy qualities.

Similarly, Google cannot determine the true worthiness of a website simply by looking into its domain age or the length of time its domain has been active. It has to judiciously look into website’s other qualities to know whether the site is trustworthy enough to rank on the first page of its SERP.

To remove all the confusion, below points serves as a reminder about all the important points that this blog post has covered so far.

Does buying expired and old domains really help?

Over the years, expired domains have become immensely popular as they come with many inherent advantages. I guess many people may not be even aware about expired domains. They actually refer to website URL or domain name that was once registered by someone but didn’t renew it at the time of renewal, so it is now available for others to buy.

It is like someone is not able to pay the rent for the property, eventually the property is taken over by a person who is able to pay the rent.

But what does expired domains has to really do with domain age. How are they really connected?

As mentioned earlier, expired domains come with many inherent benefits. They were once owned by an original owner, which means that they have been active for a pretty long time and may have been regularly crawled and indexed by search engines in the past. This obviously implies that Google is more likely to trust websites with expired domains as opposed to websites with fresh domains.

Secondly and importantly, expired domains can come with existing set of backlinks. If these old backlinks are high-quality backlinks then they can really propel your website’s search ranking.

Does this mean that expired domains always guarantee SEO success for the websites.

Nope.

Expired domains are like double edge swords. If they have many high-quality backlinks and very minimal spammy links then you have hit a jackpot. On other hand, those that are plagued with huge number of PBN links and spammy links might end up dragging down the websites ranking, let alone boosting their ranking.

To know whether a particular expired domains is worth buying it or not, make sure to check the quality of its existing backlinks by using tools like SEMrush and Ahrefs.

To sum it up, expired domains come with considerable amount of risks and hence always be judicious and discreet before buying them.

Final thought:

Domain age is not a decisive ranking signal. It can never rank a website on Google or any other search engine on its own strength. Therefore, a website’s age matters in SEO, but not to the extent that it can make or break your website’s search ranking. As your website starts aging, make sure to strengthen its trust worthiness by working on heavy weigh ranking signals like backlinks and important technical aspects.
